• The flowers have a delicate perfume.
• Bees love the flowers too, and through the winter and spring the flowers are a welcome source of nectar for bees and other pollinators.
• The leaves are edible, and the growing tips are a welcome addition to salads and soft egg dishes – note that they have a sweet, distinctive broad bean flavour. Don’t eat too many as it will stunt the plant’s cropping ability.
• The roots of broad beans take nitrogen from the air and fix it into the soil, adding nutrients to the garden. A win-win!
