Native plants for any garden

-

Now is the ideal time for planting your native plants however planting can still continue throughout the cooler months. It is common to think that our native trees are just suited to large scale plantings on farm blocks, forestry or larger landscaping projects but native trees can also make a striking statement to any home garden. From specimen trees, hedges, rockeries, wildlife attracting and mixed plantings there is a native plant to fit all garden planting situations.

For attracting native birds into your garden nothing is better than providing them with their natural food source of native plant berries and nectar.

It is all about texture and form when it comes to planting natives with the many different leaf shapes and sizes together with contrasting foliage colours. A lush green native garden doesn’t necessary mean it has to replicate a natural bush setting. Many native trees can be clipped and shaped into hedges, screens or structural shapes throughout the garden contrasting well with the more free flowing forms of native grasses and flax. From the compact foliage of Kohuhu Pittosporum tenuifolium the exotic looking leaves of Five finger Pseudopanax laetus, to the delicately divaricating branches of juvenile Manatu Plagianthus regius (Ribbonwood) there is definitely nothing dull about a native garden.

Minginui Nursery can supply quality native plants on a commercial scale but can supply to the home gardener also. The cold hardy environment of Minginui means our plants are suited to the changing climates across Aotearoa. We are happy to provide advice on species selection for your chosen project whatever the size.
