FOR THINGS TO SEE & DO

-

Discover our favourite things

to do when we are out and about playing in the big smoke.

Tūranga Central Library

So much more than just a space to entertain a passion for reading, there is something for every member of the family from dress-up corners to Lego pits, a café, 3D printers, craft sessions, music and video editing rooms, and even an innovation zone for trialling new technology.

From here it is an easy hop, skip, and a jump to the Margaret Mahy Playground and Rauora Park – for those entertaining children (of any age) you won’t be disappointed.

Central Shopping

Wandering the shops of the central city will give you a new and energised perspective of the city. While Ballantynes and The Contemporary Lounge stand tall and proud still, there are laneways and hidden pockets to discover, such as the BNZ Centre where you will find Scorpio Books and great boutiques such as Death by Denim; while across towards High Street you will find the streets lined with independent clothing stores leading the way to Little High Eatery – because what is shopping without a bite to eat and a drink to recover?

Street Art

Christchurch is spoilt for choice when it comes to street art with colourful and vibrant murals found at every corner. Exploring the central city on foot will ensure you are able to get up close and personal with pieces crafted by local and international artists – be prepared to be wowed. Visit watchthisspace.org.nz for an up-to-date map of work.

Eat & Drink

Nigella Lawson dined with them while she was in town and we are in agreement that Earl (on Lichfield St) is a must-visit for those seeking laid-back dining with perfectly honed flavours. The nearby Dux Central, Smash Palace and C1 Espresso are part of the SALT District, bringing a gritty vibe to the central city. For your second night out The Terrace is the place to go. Drawing on the success of its past life as The Strip you will find plenty to satisfy here. If you have room for Sunday brunch then Miro on Oxford Street is well worth a look.

Beyond the City

Outside of the central city confines, the revamped Merivale Mall has a number of new shops to explore while destinations such as The Tannery and The Colombo are the ideal place in which to while away the day with eateries, shops and even breweries on offer.

For those with a love of the outdoors, there is of course the beautiful Sumner Beach, New Brighton Pier, Hagley Park, Victoria Park, Bottle Lake Forest and so many more. Crisp winter mornings can be spent tackling the Rapaki Track, or for those looking for something a little different why not try the Eastenders Track in Redcliffs – an alternative to our favourite walk, Barnett Park which remains closed after the Canterbury Earthquakes.
