Latitude Magazine

Editor’s Note

- Lucinda Diack lucinda@latitudemagazine.co.nz EDITOR

I never thought I would live in Cheviot – in fact I remember a time when all I thought I wanted to do was have a briefcase. Who knows what job I thought I would do with this briefcase, I just knew I wanted one. So I went to law school. For a year – and then I bailed, changing my legal papers for ones in Art History, Communications and Psychology.

I studied (and loved) papers on different cultures, art and the complexities of the mind. I left university with a degree in Art History and Communications, and no idea what on earth I was going to do with it. Other than I didn’t want a briefcase. I wanted a handbag with a notebook and a pen, something creative, something a bit different.

Then I fell into magazines, storytelling and words – an undiscovered love where I found my place in the professional world. For many years I worked as the editor of a home magazine, before succumbing to a more tangible love – a North Canterbury stock agent. I subsequently found myself living in a small rural town, a far cry from the high-street fashion and urban amenities I was used to.

Yet despite the belief my new home would curtail my dream of a career in magazines, 12 months ago I reignited that dream when I stepped into the role of latitude Publisher and Editor. Thank you for joining me on this first whirlwind year.

So here is to rediscovering passions and following dreams – sure, they change, we are often forced to adapt them, and occasionally we adhere to them, but don’t forget dreams are there to remind us of the journey so far, and to challenge our thinking around the future.
