Gifted to the Timaru District Council by the Aoraki Art Charitable Trust, the latest piece of public art is the beautiful kinetic sculpture Quadratic, atop Timaru Bay Hill by Matt Williams. Mounted on a Timaru Bluestone pillar, its impressive five-metre height is viewable from the highway.

The piece was discovered by Debbie TempletonPage of York Street Gallery. ‘Matt’s piece came into the gallery as part of an exhibition and after watching it gently turn in the wind I knew it needed to reside somewhere special where everyone could enjoy it.’ And so the idea was born. Matt has always been fascinated with using straight lines to form curves – a theme that commonly runs through his work. Quadratic is his first large-scale attempt at building the idea into a sculpture, and one that appears to have been achieved effortlessly.

Committed to placing more public art in the Timaru District, this is the third piece the

Trust has fundraised for and made accessible to everyone. They would like to thank all of those who assisted them in making this project a reality, including Fulton Hogan, York Street Gallery, Brunswick Dental Chambers and Timaru Bluestone Industries.
