IN CLEAN AIR ZONES:

Properties less than 2 ha in size (generally urban areas):

• ultra-low emission burners are allowed into all homes, including new homes

• ultra-low emission burners have no

expiry date (under the current Air Plan) • any new burner installed must be an

ultra-low emission burner

• low emission burners may not be

installed into new homes

• existing low emission burners are able to be used from the date of install as per council permit for up to 20 years • older-style burners cannot be used. They must be replaced with an ultralow emission burner (or non-emitting heating such as a heat pump)

• open fires cannot be used. Properties that are greater than 2 ha in size (generally rural areas):

• ultra-low emission burners and low emission burners are allowed into all homes, including new homes • older-style burners can be used, but

cannot be installed

• open fires installed from 2013

onwards cannot be used

• use dry, seasoned wood only

• no visible smoke, except for brief

periods during start-up and re-loading • no burning toxic substances and materials

including painted or treated timber • no burning coal with a sulphur content of more than 1 per cent (most readily-available coal)

• There are exceptions for listed heritage buildings where the heating appliances and chimney were original features (including restored original features).

OUTSIDE OF CLEAN AIR ZONES:

Properties that are less than 2 ha in size (generally urban areas):

• burn smoke-free – same as for sites in the

Clean Air Zone

• ultra-low emission burners and low emission burners are allowed into all homes, including new homes

• open fires and older-style burners can be

used, but cannot be installed

• no burning of toxic substances/materials. Properties that are greater than 2 ha in size (generally rural areas):

• any burner may be installed and used

• no burning of toxic substances/materials • good practice to use dry and seasoned wood • good practice to have no visible smoke, except for brief periods during start up and reloading.
