A Magnificent Gift
While COVID-19 has delayed the October opening by a few weeks, Ravenscar House Museum is going to be a grand new visitor attraction for Christchurch. Described as a museum, an art gallery and a stylish contemporary home, Ravenscar is built on the vision of generous Kiwi couple Susan and Jim Wakefield.
After their Scarborough home was extensively damaged in the
22 February 2011 earthquake, the art-loving couple decided to gift a magnificent new house to the city where they could share their substantial private art collection with the people of Christchurch.
The Ravenscar Collection has been loaned to Canterbury Museum, which will operate Ravenscar House Museum. Expect to see a wall-to-wall collection of wonderful New Zealand art displayed in a way that honours the Wakefields’ vision. Designed by award-winning architects Patterson Associates, the house is set in a landscaped garden featuring a number of sculptures. Find Ravenscar House Museum at 52 Rolleston Ave, Christchurch.
