The Pony R.J. Palacio Puffin

This beautiful book is technically rated as a children’s book but to quote C.S. Lewis, ‘A children’s story that can only be enjoyed by children is not a good children’s story in the slightest.’ So, this book is for all ages. The author is best known for her book Wonder which touched so many hearts, and I suppose the best way to follow the success of that book was to write something completely different.

Silas Bird is a quiet and reserved 12-year-old boy living with his father Martin who is just as reserved. It’s 1860 and the two live in rural Ohio. Their quiet life changes when in the dead of night three men arrive on horseback and drag Martin away. Silas is completely alone except for his imaginary friend Mittenwool. The following day a beautiful horse arrives and the little band of three set out to find Martin. The journey is full of surprises – ghosts, animals, gunfighters, history, mysteries and the list goes on. Guaranteed to become a firm favourite.
