Fiji International Golf Tournament
When the Fiji International tees off on August 14th 2014 there will be plenty more at play than just a world-class golf tournament.
The inaugural event, boasting a million dollar prize purse, will signal Fiji’s official arrival into the golf tourism market with the Fiji Government, tourism industry and Fiji’s number one golf ambassador all making a push to highlight the country’s potential as a lucrative golf destination.
“I hope that after the Fiji International people will see how good of a golf course it is and decide to go there not only for a holiday but for a golfing holiday,” said former World No. 1, Vijay Singh, who designed the course set to host the Fiji International. “Don’t just go to Fiji for sunshine…go there to play golf.”
And that’s just what plenty of golf enthusiasts are doing with many considering tournament host Natadola Bay Championship Golf Course to be one of the most spectacular coastal courses in the world. Renowned for its sparkling backdrop of coral reefs, the Pacific Ocean lines 15 out of the 18 championship holes at Natadola.
Styled in traditional South Pacific architecture the clubhouse is the ultimate vantage point for breathtaking views across the golf course, reefs and rolling surf breaks – a must visit for any golf fan. The Fiji International forms part of the lucrative PGA Tour of Australasia and OneAsia schedules and will be Fiji’s biggest ever sporting event.
Headline player, Vijay Singh, is set to attract thousands of local and international fans to the spectator-friendly tournament as he returns home to play in front of his friends and family. “It’s been a little while since I’ve been back but this is a great opportunity and I hope that I can contribute to its success and give a little back to Fiji,” said Singh.
With US$1 million in prize money up for grabs Singh will be joined at Natadola Bay by some of the region’s best golfers.
To be played over four days (Thursday 14 to Sunday 17), the tournament will attract Official World Golf Ranking points and will be broadcast to over 400 million golf fans in more than 30 countries.
Natadola Bay Championship Golf Course is conveniently located alongside the Intercontinental Fiji Golf Resort & Spa, just 45 minutes drive along the Coral Coast from Nadi Town and just two and a half hours from Suva.
