Discover the island of Upolu

- By Jacqueline Dickson

The island of Upolu is proof that you don’t have to travel far to experience the ultimate in island relaxation, comfort and leisurely adventure. Approximately four hours by plane from Auckland, you will find yourself immersed in the true sense of island life.

For those seeking the perfect location to unwind and explore, you can’t go past Seabreeze Resort. Nestled privately, out of view, along its own idyllic coastline, you will find boutique luxury within easy distance to some of Upolu’s landmark attractions.

This adults-only resort is bathed in Samoan flair from every vantage point. With ten luxury villas on site (plus the idyllic Honeymoon Point house), you will find yourself spoilt with a charming blend of modern facilities and outdoor living. For supreme relaxation, put your feet up in your villa’s

own double hammock surrounded by natural sea views and breezes; or head over to the resort’s central infinity pool, order a cocktail and soak up the hot sun on a comfortable lounger overlooking the private lagoon below.

Not enough action? Seabreeze Resort offers numerous activities for guests at no charge. Ask at Paulini’s pool bar for a snorkel and goggles and swim out around the bay’s small islets, spying hundreds of fish darting in and out of coral beneath you. If snorkelling isn’t your thing but colourful fish are, why not take the glass-bottom boat out for a paddle instead, spending the day at an adjoining bay with even more seclusion and golden sands. With plenty of historic coastline to explore, just be careful not to go too far out and get caught in the daily tide – resort owner Chris will happily inform you of the best times to journey out.

If you’re lucky enough to be staying at the resort toward the end of the week, every Friday afternoon and into the night, guests are invited to partake in some traditional Samoan activities. Rinse the saltwater off and join others sampling traditional Samoan cuisine and learning how to weave, and then later, amongst the thunder of drums, witness a traditional performance by Samoan warriors.

To step up the adventure, the following day I recommend taking your swimwear and a towel and heading to To Sua Ocean Trench in the neighbouring village of Lotofoga. Translated as ‘big hole’, this natural swimming spot sees ocean water flowing in and out through underwater canals - carrying plenty of colourful sea-life with it. Enclosed within deep rock walls crawling with greenery, the somewhat steep stairs provide access down to a platform from which you can dive, jump and swim. If the stairs look too daunting to attempt, the colourful gardens that surround the trench above provide 180° ocean views – a perfect place to stop for lunch. Just remember to take some spare change as there is a small entry fee.

To venture further, ask the friendly staff at Seabreeze to organise transportation to take you to Togitogiga Waterfall - located about 30-minutes drive from the resort. Set amongst a generous expanse of rich green tropical gardens, small paths covered with Teuila (Samoa’s bright, national flower) will lead you down to this remarkable setting. Cascading waterfalls surround this popular swimming spot, which lies within tall, rich rainforest. The best time to visit is from November to April – Samoa’s wet season. Sturdy shoes are recommended, as jandals are not the best opponent for the slippery rocks that line the water floor. Feel free to bring a picnic or ball to kick around as these lush, free-to-visit surrounds are perfect for many forms of recreation.

If interested in purchasing some local wares, again request some friendly transport to take you to the town of Apia – Samoa’s busy capital. About an hour’s drive from the resort, Apia hosts a variety of shops, restaurants, nightclubs and visitor services. For fresh local produce and local handicrafts, the Fugalei Market is filled with family owned and operated stalls wishing to sell their wares every day of the week. Savalalo Flea Market is also a great place to soak up the local atmosphere and purchase traditional, hand-made souvenirs including wooden carvings, mats, sarongs and jewellery.

With bags full of fresh fruit as well as gifts to take home to loved ones, relax knowing that your friendly Seabreeze masseuse is waiting for your return. Rest assured that one of their many treatments will cure any stresses left on your mind – especially when it’s provided in the privacy of your own villa surrounded by the peaceful sounds of the South Pacific ocean.

If it’s a combination of relaxation and entertainment you’re after, make sure you don’t side step this luxury resort, located in the heart of some of Samoa’s best-kept tourist attractions.
