Adventures in Anaheim History and Culture
Richard Nixon Presidential Library & Museum:
President Nixon was one of the most experienced and well-prepared occupants of the US’s highest office. The strategic thinking that he brought to the presidency was unprecedented. He was relentless in a lifelong quest to achieve a more peaceful world, and he fashioned a comprehensive strategy for world peace that was methodically implemented over five and a half years as commander in chief from the 20th January 1969 to his last day in office on the 9th August 1974.
Yorba Linda, the hometown of the only California-born President is located just 15 minutes from downtown Anaheim. Southern California’s most exciting venue includes a stunning replica of the historic White House East Room, perfect for visitors or receptions of all sizes.
Typical group events begin with a cocktail reception in the First Lady’s Rose Garden where guests can also enjoy viewing the expansive exhibit galleries. Watch eyes light up as guests enter the elegant White House East Room for candlelight dining and dancing beneath magnificent crystal chandeliers surrounded by golden silk draperies and imported marble fireplaces. The Richard Nixon Presidential Library and Museum is open seven days a week from 10am to 5pm.
Bowers Museum:
The Charles W. Bowers Memorial Museum first opened its doors in 1936 as a city-run museum devoted primarily to the history of Orange County. In 1987, the city of Santa Ana closed the museum with the understanding that after careful study and a great deal of input from the community, the museum would be reopened as a totally transformed museum, ready to meet the challenges of the 21st century.
In October of 1992, the Bowers Museum (some six times larger than the original museum) opened its doors to a crowd of over 17,000 people. Since this highly successful reopening, the museum has presented over 150 special exhibitions from all over the world, and opened six permanent galleries that contain over 100,000 pieces. These works range from Native American artefacts to Modern American paintings. On the same grounds is the Bower’s Kidseum…a children’s museum and learning centre focused on archaeology.
On February 18th, 2007, the Bowers Museum opened the new Dorothy and Donald Kennedy Wing, which added 30,000 sq.ft, increasing its total exhibition space. It features two new galleries: The East-West Bank Gallery and Anderson-Hsu-Tu Gallery, in addition to the 300 seat Norma Kershaw Auditorium; the John M. Lee Court for events of up to 500 people; the Sharon D. Thompson Foyer; the S.L. and Betty Huang Courtyard and more to meet the needs of a growing community and audiences. The Bowers Museum days and hours of operation are: TuesdaySunday from 10am to 4pm
