A special effort

- By Paula Gaelic

An ANZAC Day that will be remembered. Katikati rallied, and through whatever resources they could find at home they decorated their fences, doors, windows and letterboxes to commemorate. There were so many adornments I could not capture them all. You could see where families had made a special effort and some with personal messages.

The Katikati Floral Art Group covered Katikati War Memorial Hall, Memorial Clock and Western Bay Museum with knitted poppies.

Steve Graveson from Katikati Open Air Art painted a wonderful painting just for this day of remembrance, which is on display in the door/window of Western Bay Museum.

At 6.00am Katikati RSA and Western Bay Museum raised the Australian and New Zealand flags as we always do. It was a very special occasion, and although our War Memorial Square was not full of people, it was crowded with spirit. The Last Post and The Ode could be heard in the stillness of the morning from families that were having private ceremonies.

A brilliant red sunrise shone over our town centre and people throughout the day laid wreaths and poppies. Everyone maintaining their social distancing but paying their respects.

At 5.00pm the Australian and New Zealand flags were lowered on an ANZAC Day.
