Ōmokoroa Lions tertiary scholarship winners for 2021

- By Christine Robertson

Two outstanding young men from Plummer’s Point Road were this year’s winners of the Ōmokoroa Lions Club tertiary scholarships. These scholarships are available to students from the Ōmokoroa district who have completed at least one year of tertiary education. The criteria for the scholarships are academic excellence, the student’s vision of their career path, involvement in extra-curricula activities and their financial need.

The quality of the applicants this year was exceptional, and all students interviewed would have been worthy recipients of the awards. First equal, and winners of the combined Beryl Scott/Precious Brothers Award of $2000 were Alex Jenkin and Russell Green.

Alex Jenkin and his family have been residents of the Ōmokoroa community since moving from England in 2006. Alex attended Ōmokoroa No 1 school before moving to Tauranga Boys’ College where he was placed in the accelerated class stream. This fast-paced learning environment sparked his enthusiasm for maths and science. Alex is an outstanding scholar, excelling in all areas of NCEA and in his chosen career path of engineering science at the University of Auckland. As well as his strong academic

record, Alex is also heavily involved in sports, plays rugby competitively as well as engaging in water-polo, volleyball and surfing. Alex is also a black belt Martial Arts instructor.

When not away from home studying health science in Dunedin, Russell Green lives on an avocado orchard with his family on Plummer’s Point road.

Russell attended Ōmokoroa No1 school before moving to Tauranga Boys’ College where he went on to be named as Deputy Head Boy in his final year. Russell has an exemplary academic record, and after a successful first year of tertiary study was offered a place in the School of Physiotherapy at the University of Otago. His energy and enthusiasm are evident as he talks about his goal to work as a physiotherapist with elite athletes in high performance sport. Along with his studies, Russell is actively engaged in a wide range of sporting activities including volleyball, hockey, cross-country and athletics.
