Stride out in 2019

It’s been a busy festive period, with events galore and plenty of frantic Christmas shopping.

I hope each of you managed to recoup some energy over the Christmas break.

Now we’re into the New Year, if you made the resolution to get fit this summer, there’s no better way than to join the Manawatu¯ Striders Super Sevens which are back for 2019.

■ For a great night out with friends, that guarantees a good laugh, get yourself along to The Rumble on this Thursday night and Thursday January 31 for Palmerston North’s premier stand-up comedy open mic nights. Purchase your tickets on Eventfinda.

■ Get a rush as you watch 800 horsepower winged monsters thunder around the Arena at 160kph at the PartsWorld North Island Sprintcar Championsh­ip. Slot this into your holiday calendar for this Saturday from 6:30pm — 10pm at Central Energy Trust Arena.

■ Let the kids cool down with a swim and free use of the awesome inflatable­s at Makino Aquatic Centre for their Summer School Holiday Inflatable­s, running every day during the School Holiday period from 1pm — 3pm.

■ Give your little ones the chance to build their swimming skills and confidence in the water at the Makino Aquatic Centre’s Summer Swim School Holiday Lessons. Classes will be on from Monday 14 January to Friday 18 January between 9am — 5pm. Make sure to enroll on their website, www.makino.co.nz.

■ Take the kids along to an amazing show, Zappo the Magician Performanc­e at Palmerston North Central Library this Monday from 1pm — 2pm. Zappo is an awardwinni­ng magician who performs regularly throughout the lower North Island. He has joined the Summer Reading tour with a show that is sure to spread the joy of reading.

■ Keep the kids entertaine­d at the Te Patikitiki Library with exciting free events on for the holidays.

■ This Tuesday from 1pm — 2pm or 2.30pm — 3.30pm, let the kids put their brains to the test at Techy Tuesday, where they learn to programme a robot through a maze. Book a space by calling 06 357 2108.

■ On Wednesday from 10:30 am — 1.30am, there’s a treat in store with the internatio­nal awardwinni­ng theatre company, Little Dog Barking performing a new puppet play.

o Summer Crafts start at 2.30pm — 4pm on Thursday, with the kids learning how to create their very own magic maze.

■ On Friday 25 January, Te Patikitiki Library and Sport Manawatu join forces to hold an epic Summer Sports Family Fun Day at Monrad Park from 11am — 3pm. Bring a picnic lunch, sun hat and plenty of sunscreen for a day of fun for the whole family.

■ The Frank Burkitt Band are back in Palmerston North for the release of their new EP ahead of the longest tour of their lives through New Zealand, Australia and the UK. Purchase your tickets to see them live at The Globe on Friday January 18 from The Globe ticketing office.

■ Join the Manawatu Striders Super Sevens and get fit this summer. Suitable for all ages and abilities, so bring the kids along for some active fun every Tuesday night from January 15 at YMCA Palmerston North Recreation Centre. Break yourself in gently with a 3km walk or run, but if you want more of a challenge then take on the 7km route. Finish off with a free banana and sausage sizzle once you cross the finish line.

■ Marton Country Music Festival is back for a 14th year on January 18, 19 and 20, featuring local talent as well as internatio­nal talent, Noel Flynn, a popular Country music artist from County Meath, Ireland. If you want to have a go yourself, show off your skills at the open mic sessions on each morning.
