Variety concert of classical and less serious live music

-

Matinee series convenor Guy Donaldson has put together a Variety Concert of mainly classical music based upon the local music club Musica Viva (Live Music).

Donaldson said the concert replaces the cancellation by violin virtuoso Hannah Fang who was to play at the matinee concert on the day.

“The concert will include last year’s winner of the violin section — Melanie Pinkney, and this year’s outstanding winner of the piano scholarship — Ciaran Carroll.”

In the 2018 national PACANZ competition featuring the best of New Zealand’s young performers, Ciaran was nominated as the most promising pianist.

Many of the performers featured in the matinee concert will be familiar to Globe audiences, and include clarinetist Ingrid Vlieg, flutist Diana Neild, Baroque performers Roy Tankersley and Maurice Quinn, jazz pianist Chris Dann, and duet pianists Christine ArcherLockwood and Guy Donaldson.

‘The

programme will also include other fine performers yet to be heard as featured

’ artists on the Globe stage.

“The programme will also include other fine performers yet to be heard as featured artists on the Globe stage.” Donaldson said to ensure the tone of the concert is not entirely serious there will be some light vocal music including Gilbert and Sullivan numbers performed by Graham Doull and John Ramsay, and a duet version of Bette Midler’s The Rose by Mavis Fisher and Joe Pape.

“One extraordinary item will be a performance for solo flute of a piece depicting a train ride played by Emma Minchin.

One of the aims of

Musica Viva is to nurture young performers in the Manawatu¯ area through a Young Performers Scholarship which the Society has run with the support of the Palmerston North Rotary Club since 1993.

Each month from March to December Musica Viva gives live performances of music of enduring quality for members on a Monday evening concert in the Evelyn Rawlins Room at Square Edge.

The concert begins at 2.30pm at the Globe 1 Theatre on November 17. Admission is by donation, recommended to be from $5.
