Summer print programme on offer
The Te Manawa Learning team invites you to its Summer Printmaking programme, January 15-24.
Printing as we know it — on paper or similar materials — has been around for more than two thousand years. This new programme combines that ancient technology with modern creativity to make cool things to take home and put on the wall.
Printer John Brebner will bring his antique printblocks on which visitors can make postcards. “Guerrilla Print!” tracks down interesting patterns in the urban environment and prints them on clothing, patches and accessories.
One workshop lets visitors try their hand with monoprinting, the technique used by artist Sue Cooke to create her exhibition “A Songless Land”, now on display in the Art Gallery. It’s essentially printing a painting on to another surface.
Movable type is a thousandyear-old Chinese invention. Johannes Gutenberg introduced the printing press in the mid 15th century. Together, these two technologies created unprecedented access to books, beginning a learning revolution.
These days, movable type is most likely to be found in the collection of a museum, and Te Manawa has drawers upon drawers of the stuff. “Print Make Zine” will use this type — including its neat selection of icons, patterns and symbols — to help visitors create a personalised zine and start a revolution of their own.
The workshops will run from 10am to 3pm each day, although some activities start at 11am. There may be a recommended age for some workshops, but there will be all-ages activities available every day. Entry is by ko¯ ha. The full programme is available on our website, www.temanawa.co.nz.
