■ As it is the Year of the Rat, get ready for some public lantern-making workshops with REACT which will lead to the Lantern Parade on February 29. All materials will be provided, and this event is suitable for all ages. Head along to 106 King St over the next few weeks for one of the free workshops. You have the choice of Tuesday, February 18 from 3pm-8pm, or Saturday, February 22 and Sunday, February 23 from 11am-4pm. Get ready for a creative and exciting experience.

■ Get along to The Globe Theatre on Wednesday, February 19 to see Delaney Davidson at 7.30pm, a distinctiv­e figure in the NZ musical landscape. Over a series of albums and compelling live performanc­es he has presented his often jarring yet beautiful songs like Some Strange Spook Outlaw Phantom. Get your tickets from The Globe Theatre.

■ Yet another famous “Eat Up Cookery” vegetarian class is being held at St Peter’s College, 6pm, Thursday, February 20. You will be shown new ways to include more meatless meals in your life in easy, affordable ways. All the recipes are made from scratch and use minimally processed ingredient­s, and no sugar. ■ Is history your thing? Make your way to the Palmerston North Library on Thursday, February 20 at 12pm to listen to “NZ’s Involvemen­t In the Boer War 1899-1902” for the 120th anniversar­y of the Boer War.

What caused the conflict and why was New Zealand involved? Can we see any similariti­es between the Boer War and the New Zealand Land Wars? Were there any lessons for what followed in Vietnam or Afghanista­n? The presenter is retired Lt. Col Bryan Wells. Entry is $3 donated to the Royal Engineers Charitable Trust.

■ An exciting new night market has come to Palmerston North on George St. “Friday Night Market” will be held tomorrow, February 14 until the beginning of April from 5pm-8pm.

Come and chill out and stroll under wide verandas on one of Palmerston North’s beautiful historic streets. Window shop, chat to stall holders, or listen to live music while you have your portrait drawn, then treat yourself to a meal at one of George St’s cafes and restaurant­s. ■ Movies in Parks is a series of free family movie nights in seven neighbourh­oods throughout summer. Head down to the Internatio­nal Pacific College (IPU) on Friday, February 21 from 7pm to watch How to Train Your Dragon — The Hidden World.

While you’re there, find out about community and council initiative­s in your neighbourh­ood. There will be plenty for the kids to do with big jenga, connect four, skipping ropes and a bunch of other activities.

This is an outdoor movie but in case of bad weather the movie will move inside to the IPU Recreation Centre — check the PNCC Facebook page for updates.

■ The Big Bike Film Night is on a mission sharing the best cycling short films from around the world with you. Join in at The Globe Theatre, on Friday, February 21 at 7pm for an evening of action, drama, humour, and plenty of inspiratio­n.

The evening is unashamedl­y and utterly designed and devised for the twowheel devotee.
