Stick to the left — new walkways safety video released

-

Stick to the left, pick up your dog’s poo and slow down are some of the messages Palmerston North City Council is promoting in a new walkways safety video.

The council is reminding residents to be aware of their surroundings when getting their daily fix of fresh air so everyone feels safe on the city’s shared walkways.

“We regularly receive feedback that users of our pathways could show more consideration when stretching their legs — from picking up litter and keeping your dog on a leash to allowing cyclists to pass safely,” parks and reserves manager Kathy Dever-Tod says.

Anyone using shared paths is required by law to use them fairly and safely to minimise the chance of accidents.

“We’re asking cyclists to cycle like you drive — keep left and keep alert. It’s not the Tour de France, so slow down, use a bell and pass on the grass if you have to,” she says.

Dog walkers should know where they can remove the leash, to keep an eye on their furry friends and to scoop their poop.

Dever-Tod encourages wha¯nau to teach their children good walkway etiquette — keep to the left, slow down and smile.

Horse riders are asked to maintain a steady walking pace and a safe distance from other users. When walking near horses, do not shout or make sudden movements, give a wide berth when overtaking and let the rider know you are there.

“Motorbikes and cars do not belong on our walkways. If you see them, call the police.”

The Air NZ-inspired safety video features drag performer Rhubarb Rogue. Rhubarb is also known as Henrique Beirao, production manager at Centrepoint Theatre.
