After days of hot, dry weather, a day of showers saw motorists sliding off rain-slicked roads.
Two people were taken to Palmerston North Hospital after a two-car collision in the central city yesterday.
The crash happened about 12.50pm at the intersection of Walding and Taonui streets, Constable Allan McLean said.
Both drivers were taken to hospital.
One driver, a man delivering courier parcels, suffered moderate head injuries with heavy facial bleeding.
The other, an elderly woman, was being assessed.
The inclement weather conditions might have been a factor, but police were still investigating.
Both cars were damaged extensively. Walding St remained open.
In another crash, two vehicles collided in Longburn-Rongotea Rd, just before 2pm.
Constable Catherine Barham, of Palmerston North, said a Toyota HiAce and a Transit campervan col- lided in the slippery conditions, about 100 metres from the intersection with State Highway 56.
Ms Barham said it appeared the campervan, driven by a 78-year-old man, with his wife as a passenger, was turning right into a driveway when the van behind them hit as it tried to pass.
The campervan was pushed up the grass verge, while the van ran into a concrete fence.
The 56-year-old driver of the van was uninjured, while his mother, sitting in the passenger seat, suffered minor injuries and was taken to Palmerston North Hospital.
The HiAce van was damaged extensively and ended up against the concrete wall of a neighbouring property, while the campervan had moderate damage.
MetService forecaster Daniel Corbett said the wet weather should clear today but temperatures would plummet from the mid-to-high 20 degrees Celsius experienced in the past week.
He expected temperatures around the mid-teens today and tomorrow.
