Duke leads royal fashion pack on magazine’s best- dressed list

-

London – He may be the oldest male member of the royal family but the Duke of Edinburgh has also been voted the most stylish.

Prince Philip has made it on to a list of best- dressed men alongside Harry Styles of One Direction, the rapper Tinie Tempah and David Beckham.

Nick Grimshaw, the Radio 1 DJ, came top of GQ magazine’s Best- Dressed Men List, followed by Tom Hiddleston, the actor who starred in The Avengers, with third place claimed by Benedict Cumberbatch, who plays Sherlock Holmes in the new BBC series.

Despite ranking 26th out of 30, the Duke of Edinburgh was way ahead of his sons and grandsons in the style stakes, who did not even merit a mention.

Babies were not included in the list, so the fashion credibility of Prince George of Cambridge remains intact.

The magazine said that the duke ‘‘ deserves yet another medal – for his services to classic British tailoring’’.

Bill Prince, GQ’s deputy editor, said: ‘‘ Top- down management still rules among the royals, evidenced by the degree to which the Duke of Edinburgh’s sons, grandsons ( and, who knows, great- grandson) hero- worship his time- honoured style.’’

The Prince of Wales can take comfort from the fact that he bagged eighth place on the male fashion scale last year.

Fourth on this year’s list was Idris Elba, who played Nelson Mandela in the film Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom, and fifth was Dan Stevens, the Downton Abbey actor.

He was followed by Tinie Tempah.

Dermot O’Leary, the Factor host, was ranked seventh, followed by Arctic Monkeys’ frontman Alex Turner, fashion designer Charlie Casely- Hayford and model David Gandy.

GQ also compiled a list of worst- dressed men. At No 1 was fashion designer Ozwald Boateng, followed by Respect Party MP George Galloway.

Other sorry dressers included Paul Flowers, the disgraced former chairman of the Co- op Bank, who was fourth, and Nigel Farage, the leader of the UK Independence Party, who was ranked 10th.

The list was compiled by GQ staff and a panel of fashion experts and celebrities, including Giorgio Armani, Tom Ford, Sir Roger Moore and Donatella Versace.

The complete roll- call of bestdressed men is featured in the February issue of GQ magazine, which is available from January 2.
