Cambell a major disaster

- Liam Hyslop

An American sports broadcaster has taken a shot at Michael Campbell, naming him as one of the worst golfers to win a major in the past half century.

CBS Sports ranked the New Zealander fifth based on his unseemly record on the American PGA tour.

Campbell won the 2005 US Open, seeing off Tiger Woods in the process, but that was his only win in the United States, a point noted in the American- centric list.

He won 15 times in all and was named the 2005 European Tour Player of the Year after a magical season.

He also spent six years of his career ranked in the top 50 players in the world and was consistently inside the top 20 with a peak ranking of 12 in 2001, years before his US Open victory.

But he has had a widely reported form slump since 2005 and the CBS list noted his 0- for- 10 cut making record at the Masters, which included an 11- over par 83 in 2010.

This year Campbell’s results were again largely disappointing despite a promising start to 2013.

He played 14 events including the US Open where he finished 123rd.

Of the five events where he made the cut, his best performance was 17th equal at the Qatar Masters in January.

His worst was a two- round the US Open.

Campbell was below par at the end of four rounds in only three events – Abu Dhabi Golf Championship, the Qatar Masters and the Russian Open.

There were much worse players than Campbell on the list, with nonames like Rich Beem and Australia’s Ian Baker- Finch and Wayne Grady receiving mentions.

However, there were none worse than Shaun Micheel.

He made one of the best clutch shots in major history in winning the 2003 PGA Championship.

Unfortunately, that was the end of

154 at his good form and in 380 career starts on the PGA Tour he has one win.
