Kahlua heads for winning post
Levin Riding for the Disabled horse Kahlua is in the race to be named best horse in the country, and she’s already winning by a nose.
The annual competition, run by New Zealand Riding for the Disabled ( RNZDA), asks its 55 member groups around the country to nominate one of their horses for the title of RNZDA Horse of the Year.
From these, a top 10 is chosen, and put to a public vote.
Last night, Kahlua was starting to break away from the pack, with 421 votes.
Volunteer Cathy Holmes said Kahlua originally came from a family in Shannon, who had purchased the Standardbred mare for their daughter as a pony club horse.
When she proved unsuitable, the then 4- year- old was purchased by the group with money donated from the Variety Club.
For 11- year- old Lucan Gifford, Kahlua provided his first taste of horse riding.
Lucan, who has autism, was nervous at first, but five years later, is a regular and has improved muscle tone, co- ordination and in ability to follow instructions.
Although Lucan has now moved on to another horse, he always spends some quality time with Kahlua whenever he visits the arena.
Levin Group RDA president Rick Schimpf described Kahlua as steady and dependable.
‘‘ She is amazingly calm, with a lovely, soft nature, accepting anyone handling and leading her. Her steady, smooth gait and strong back means balance is easier for riders and sidewalkers, and she always behaves the same.’’
The winning horse will receive an $ 800 prize pack, which includes vouchers for horse feed, gear and accessories, and a customised blanket. Votes can be made through the RNZDA website. The winner will be announced on May 27.
