Reid stars as Hammers upset City

striker Diego Costa raised his hands to Arsenal defender Laurent Koscielny.

Referee Mike Dean allowed Costa to stay on the field, but Gabriel went for kicking out at Costa a minute later.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger was angry about that.

‘‘I think it’s unacceptable what [Costa] does to Koscielny. He pushes him down, he hits him in the face. I do not understand Mike Dean’s decision at all,’’ Wenger said. ‘‘Why does Diego Costa stay on the pitch and Gabriel is sent off? He will do the same next week and it’s always the same, he is always provoking.’’

Leicester drew 2-2 at Stoke City, but the point was a very welcome one for the Foxes, who came back from 2-0 down for the second week running to avoid defeat.

Last week they came from behind to beat Aston Villa 3-2 and after trailing 2-0 to Stoke, a penalty from Ryad Mahrez and an equal- iser from Jamie Vardy maintained Leicester’s unbeaten start.

Leicester boss Claudio Ranieri said afterwards: ‘‘In the second half we reacted very well and that is what is important for me. I said at halftime that Stoke seemed more desperate to win than us and I did not think that was possible.

‘‘I said if we have to lose the match let’s show our strength and pride, let’s react.’’

Stoke, who led 2-0 after 20 minutes with Bojan Krcic and Jon Walters scoring, are still winless after six games and are 18th with only three points.

Newcastle United are also still winless and 19th after losing 2-1 at home to Watford, whose goals came from Odion Ighalo. He also scored the winner against Swansea last week.

Daryl Janmaat pulled one back for Newcastle after 62 minutes but Steve McClaren’s side were booed off by their long-suffering fans.

Just about the only thing bring- ing a smile to Geordie faces is that their arch-rivals Sunderland are one place below them in last.

Sunderland, who like Newcastle only have two points, were beaten 2-0 by another of the promoted sides, Bournemouth, where goals from Callum Wilson and Matt Ritchie secured the Cherries’ first home win of the season.

Sunderland’s misery was completed when defender Younes Kaboul was sent off late in the game. New Zealand’s Andrea Hewitt recorded another podium finish in the world series after finishing fourth in the Chicago finale.

The Canterbury athlete finished an outstanding second overall in the ITU World Triathlon Series after Saturday’s race.

The Kiwi, and all her fellow WTS competitors, once again had to bow before the might of brilliant American Gwen Jorgensen who completed an historic undefeated season with another runaway victory in the Chicago Olympicdistance event (1.5km swin, 40km cycle, 10km run) brought forward because of looming bad weather.

It is the first time an athlete, male or female, has gone through an entire series without tasting defeat, and underlines the complete dominance the American holds on the sport at the moment.

It was the 12th consecutive victory for the awesome American and completed her second straight WTS series triumph.

Jorgensen, from nearby St Paul, Minnesota, had to rally from 17th at the end of the bike leg. She emerged in a lead pack of three on the run, alongside Brits Non Stanford and Vicky Holland, but easily kicked clear over the latter stages to head home Stanford by 29 seconds and Holland by 44s.

For the Brits it was a sweet result, not only placing them on the race podium alongside the sport’s No 1 performer, but also earning spots at the Rio Olympics next year.

Hewitt put in a perfectly judged race to kick away from the chasing pack and come home fourth, six seconds clear of Holland’s Rachel Klamer.

She was 1:08 behind Jorgensen with a time of 1:56:44.

Ryan Sissons finished 34th in the men’s race yesterday as Spaniard Javier Gomez claimed his fifth world title with a second placed finish. The 27-year old dropped five places to 33rd in the final overall standings, 11 places behind New Zealand’s highest place tri-athlete Tony Dodds in 22nd – who did not race in Chicago.
