Feilding Store Stock Sale Friday July 29

The local region has become saturated with the continuous rain over recent weeks.

Strictly speaking, the overall quality of the hogget yarding was a little less than last week but sale prices for most sections were buoyed by Hawke’s Bay interests. The top sale price was $125 for 43 woolly cryptorchids from M & T Frame, Dannevirke, although these hoggets were much heavier than the rest, and the Sue Bros, Ohakune, sold 206 woolly cryptorchids for $114. The ewe hoggets continue to sell at a slight discount to the male hoggets, maybe 10 cents/kg, but still firmed overall with top money being $102 for a good line of 353 shorn ewe hoggets from A & S Goldsbury, Wanganui. The longer term hogget section probably firmed.

The cattle sale began with a larger entry of vetted in calf cows. Although mostly all were only in medium condition.,

The steer offering was a little patchy, as might be expected in the middle of winter, but quality steers sold to good demand. 9 angus and angus/hereford cross rising three year steers from D & S Sweet, Kimbolton, sold for $1955 and 9 two year old angus/hereford steers from JJ Farms, Cheltenham, sold for $1905 ($3.12).

Only one pen of two year old bulls was offered – 19 friesians from Parkes Farming, Ohingaiti, which sold for $1640 ($3.23). This contrasted with a very large yarding of 454 yearling bulls and these were firm with the oldest (and heaviest) attracting attention. l

The heifer offering was mostly of a medium type this week and both the older heifers and yearling heifers were reasonably firm on a reduced size yarding also.

The mild winter, even though wetter than preferred, is helping the cattle market.

Feilding Prime Stock Sale Monday July 25

This Monday prime sheep sale is becoming a victim of its own success with over 11,330 sheep entered, of which 8782 were hoggets. This made it the biggest Monday sale that anyone could remember and such a large yarding must influence sale prices. And so it was with prime lamb sale prices down about 20 cents/kg on a schedule basis or about $5-6/head. That should be regarded as a healthy adjustment. This sale was still a viable option for prime lamb sellers. The headline money was $164 for 9 huge blackface male lambs from Mt Curl, . Whereas last week, many big male lambs sold over $140/head, this week saw the best of the male lambs like those from D Schnell, D Kellick and Nikau Partnership sell for $136 or $137.

The sale became top heavy with store hoggets, even though many were forward store, and the store hogget section of nearly 3,000 head also eased .

2523 ewes were offered and held up reasonably well. All the ewes seemed to be selling to a constant market with most making around the $3/kg equivalent. T

The return of a main buyer resulted in a firming in the cow market. Yarded numbers are continuing to drop away and the good cows did improve. There were no beef cows entered as all the cows were from the dairy herds.

No steers at all came forward and only a handful of heifers of which the beef heifers, which were lighter this week.

Only two bulls were offered .
