Extra hours for food charity

A Palmerston North’s food charity is helping more needy people than ever, after extending its afternoon hours.

Just Zilch is now supplying food to more than 200 people on some weekdays.

The food charity donates necessary items, such as milk, bread, fruit and vegetables, and tins of beans and spaghetti to people who need an extra helping hand.

Just Zilch director Rebecca Culver said the charity was trialling new hours to extend the time people could access free food during the day.

The store on Featherston St is now open between 1.30pm and 2.30pm each weekday.

The news has been welcomed by those who rely on Just Zilch.

Dylan Taylor said he would come down almost every week.

‘‘It is usually those days before payday. Most people here have a similar story to that.’’

Taylor said longer hours would help people who could not get out later in the evening.

‘‘Without it people would be living hungry through the week. It is crucial. We are very thankful and lucky to have it.’’

Another user said he probably would have starved over the past month if Just Zilch did not exist.

Culver said the trial had between 15 and 40 people a day visit the store during the new hours. Most were new people seeking help, she said.

‘‘The demand for the new hours is not huge. However, they suit parents of young children and retirees in need. Often, they’re unable to visit in the evenings, particularly in winter, so it’s great that we can provide flexible hours to help them.’’

She said during the day the food charity’s supply was limited, as most providers gave food at the end of the day. But fruit, vegetables, bread and bulk items were available.

‘‘Sadly, demand for our services continues to grow. However, it’s pleasing that so many local food and beverage companies support us.

‘‘We now have nearly 40 suppliers, in the last few months.’’
