Carter in cup collision

- YACHTING

The All Blacks curse hit the America’s Cup again with Dan Carter involved in a collision with Team New Zealand in Toulon.

Carter was a guest on Britain’s Ben Ainslie Racing during the sixth and final race of the world series regatta in France yesterday.

The Brits got in a tangle with the Kiwis on the start line and incurred a penalty through the collision.

‘‘Can’t believe we hit Emiratesteamnz with Dancarter on board. I think I saw a small grin,’’ skipper Ainslie tweeted, labelling Carter the ‘‘foiling flyhalf’’.

Carter’s mishap came just days after Ma’a Nonu was involved in a high-speed training crash while a guest on Team, New Zealand’s foiling 45-foot catamaran.

It wasn’t a great regatta for Team New Zealand. They struggled to a fifth, sixth and second in the final three races.

That placed them fifth in the Toulon event though they held their third placing on the overall series which now heads to Japan in November.

Team New Zealand didn’t read the tricky conditions in Toulon well and paid the price. Burling said the wind range was ‘‘ at the bottom end of what these boats can sail in’’ as light airs continued to plague the French regatta.

‘‘To be honest in the first two races, we didn’t sail all that well and got a little unlucky at times but bounced back in the last race to get a second which went a small way to salvaging an otherwise pretty tough day for us,’’ Burling said.

Tactician Ray Davies added: ’’In the light air it is really hard to fight back places once you are back a bit.

‘‘We tried, but that was probably one of the problems, we were trying to hard, too many things and it didn’t quite work out. ‘‘ Team New Zealand skipper Glenn Ashby was staying positive with an eye to the year’s final event in Fukuoka. He felt results were showing the increasing competitiveness across the six syndicates working towards next year’s America’s Cup in Bermuda.

‘‘As we’ve seen, teams are winning regattas even when they’re finishing last, so it just shows that anything can happen,’’ Team New Zealand skipper Glenn Ashby said.
