Gymnasts head off to national championships

- DEBBIE LEACH

Congratulations to our gymnasts selected for the Wanganuimanawatu team for the New Zealand gymsports championships in Invercargill at the end of the month.

Manawatu coaches Melanie Allen and Anne-marie Dawson will also be attending.

Manawatu gymnasts in the 11strong team are Michelle Ngan and Caitlyn Leach (step 9); Alice Te Rangi and Hannah O’brien (step 8); and Frances Allen and Daisy Thurlby (step 7).

Most of these gymnasts have represented Wanganui-manawatu for many years, except Thurlby, who is attending nationals for the first time.

There are also four gymnasts (and one coach) from Wanganui; and one gymnast from Taihape.

What better time to join gymnastics with the Summer Olympics still abuzz in the air, after the Rio Games finished recently.

Boys competitive gymnastics have had a healthy expression of interest.

Recently, Manawatu Gymsports have held assessments for boys aged 6-9 years, with a few boys selected.

Boys are certainly giving it a go, with keen interest from older boys wanting to make a late start to the competitive sport.

We encourage those out there who are keen, to take a step towards giving gymnastics a go, including mums or dads who may wish to volunteer as coaches.
