We won’t see recovering Milner-skudder this year

- GEORGE HEAGNEY

Spotted at Manawatu Turbos training last week was All Blacks star Nehe Milnerskudder.

The flying winger is on the comeback trail from a shoulder injury picked up while playing for the Hurricanes at the start of the year.

But even though he appears close to full fitness, getting involved in some contact, it is unlikely he will play again this year.

New Zealand Rugby want him kept in cotton wool before the busy 2017 season.

But that’s cold comfort for long-time fans who want to see him back doing what he does best. The turf may be part of a bigger sports complex in the future.

School masters

Manawatu’s teachers gave a lesson on the rugby field when they faced their Taranaki counterparts.

Mana in Education, the Manawatu men’s teacher rugby team, was started this year to help teachers with networking. In their first outing on Saturday, Manawatu beat Taranaki 28-26 in New Plymouth, and they have another game planned in three weeks against Hawke’s Bay.

Gift for footballers

Manawatu football clubs Hokowhitu and Takaro are among the first group of clubs and national league teams to receive a defibrillator.

For the next three years, New Zealand Football will supply 60 defibrillators to clubs who meet a quality club mark throughout the country.

In-depth coverage

Basketballers at the New Zealand secondary schools championships in Palmerston North this week will have an edge over previous years.

This year’s tournament, which has about 850 teenagers playing, is being covered by Glory League, an online statistics and highlights service.

Games are filmed so players can see their video highlights.
