Morriss century sets up big Marist win

- GEORGE HEAGNEY

A beefed-up Marist gave Old Boys an innings-and-186-run hiding in the second round of the two-day competition at Manawaroa Park on Saturday.

Led by a century from allrounder Connor Morriss, and with a pace bowling attack of New Zealand fast bowler Adam Milne and Central Districts seamer Navin Patel, Marist were too strong.

Milne is returning from injury, while Patel wasn’t required by CD this weekend.

Marist had rolled Old Boys for just 81 last week and were 243-5 at stumps after Milne had scored 94.

Marist then pushed on to 393-6 declared, with Morriss, who was unbeaten on 54 after the first day, went on to score 102 not out before Marist declared. Morriss was joined by Dave Meiring, who score 93 and Old Boys could only pick up one wicket.

Old Boys then had to bat out the day to save the match, and survived 50 overs before they were

out for 126.

Milne was steaming in off a full run up, but luckily for Old Boys, the pitch was a bit slow.

Milne took 3-14 from eight overs, Patel picked up 2-35 from 16 overs and Matt Wells had 2-25. There were a couple of starts from Robbie Laird (23), Tim Richards (29) and Paul Summerskill (21), but they couldn’t save the game.

Six wickets from paceman Caleb Gaylard was not enough to stop them slumping to a 33-run loss against

Freyberg Palmerston North Boys’ High School.

The game was well advanced after the first day, with Boys’ High resuming at 19-1 in their second innings, with a lead of 37 runs.

The schoolboys had scored 85 batting first on the first day, then rolled Freyberg for 67.

Opener Ben Roberts was on the of the overnight batsmen not out and he went on to make 20 runs and he shared in an important partnership with top scorer Bryn Wilson, who scored 29, as they added 32 runs for the fourth wicket. Those two offered the main resistance as left-armer Gaylard, back from injury, tore through the Boys’ High batting lineup.

Gaylard bowled nine overs, taking 6-20 as they bowled Boys’ High out for 109 in 47 overs.

Left-arm spinner Ruchira Pupulewatte was tight, bowling 16 overs, taking 1-18.

That set Freyberg 127 runs to win, but the Boys’ High bowlers did just as well and rolled Freyberg again, this time for 94 in 45.1 overs.

Jack Harris and Cameron Harridge did the job with the new ball, taking 3-10 and 2-30 respectively, to have Freyberg battling at 8-4 inside nine overs.

Then Jack Stratton, who hasn’t played much this season due to injury, removed Freyberg’s troublesome lower order.

Pupulewatte dug in to score 40 not out at No 6 and he gave them some hope with partnerships of 35 with Harry Wenham (16) and 35 with Steven Carter (15), before he ran out of partners.

Pace bowler Stratton picked up 4-14 from 10 overs and and took four of the last five wickets to fall.

romped to an inningsand-123-run thrashing of

United Palmerston.

United resumed at 240-5, after Palmerston scored 93-9 declared.

United pressed on to 336-7 in 83 overs, thanks to first-innings century maker Robbie James, before they declared with a lead of 244.

Nathan Hill went on from his unbeaten 37 to be out for 43, but Mason Hughes, who missed the first day while on rep duty, scored 54 not out. Seamer Carlos Jensen was the best of the Palmerston bowlers with 3-88 from 23 overs.

In Palmerston’s reply, none of their batsmen fired and were all out for 120 in 65.5 overs. Wezley Masterton made 40 at No 3, but there were no major contributions apart from Corey Perrett’s 21.

United’s opening bowlers did the damage, as Scott Macgibbon took top-order wickets to put Palmerston under pressure and he snared 4-29. Then Cam Harris came back to finish things off, taking 4-15 from 15.5 overs.
