Long-serving bowls extraordinaire dies

- STEW MCGRAIL AND SHAUN EADE

Volunteer extraordinaire. That sums up Manawatu bowler Stan Goston, who died last week.

A long-serving member of the Manawatu Bowls centre, nothing was too much bother for Goston.

Since quitting the centre, he maintained a fervent interest in the sport, and in latter years was managing the mid-week Skoglund triples competition.

Until his passing, Goston was patron of Terrace End.

A true blue Cantabrian, he was a regular to the New Zealand Trotting cup meeting and was the last station master at Palmerston North.

His funeral will be in Waikanae on Wednesday.

Golfing legend in Manawatu

New Zealand’s greatest golfer, Sir Bob Charles, will line up at the New Zealand PGA Championship pro-am at the Manawatu Golf Club on March 1.

The 80-year-old is still capable of firing an impressive round and will prove a special playing partner for the amateurs paired with him.

The pro-am is the day before the start of the New Zealand PGA Championship.

Recognition time

Manawatu’s best and brightest sportspeople will be celebrated in two weeks’ time.

The Manawatu Sports Awards are on Friday, March 3 at the CET Arena, and it will be the first time the awards have been judged on achievements in a calendar year, rather than a judging window of September to September.

There is a handful of Olympians in the star field, as well as world champions, New Zealand captains and one Olympic medal winner.
