Rosie Myers breaks leg
A broken leg will sideline leading jockey Rosie Myers for 10 weeks.
She suffered the injury in an incident at the starting gates during the Wanganui jump-outs on Friday morning.
Myers’ partner William Fell, confirmed the break on Friday afternoon, but said it does not require surgery.
‘‘She will be in a cast for six weeks and hopefully back riding in 10 weeks,’’ Fell said.
‘‘It’s not the big bone, it’s the smaller one, so hopefully it will heal quicker,’’ he said.
Myers was due to ride Ave Maria, a $121 longshot, in Saturday’s Group I New Zealand Oaks at Trentham.
Canterbury jockey Chris Johnson has been confirmed to replace Myers on Ave Maria, who is trained by her uncle Kevin Myers.
The injury was a bitter blow for Myers, who just hours earlier, enjoyed a successful night at Ellerslie on Thursday evening.
She rode the Stephen Marshtrained Thee Auld Floozie to victory in the Group II Westbury Classic and Benzini to a close second behind Lizzie L’amour in the Group I Bonecrusher New Zealand Stakes.
Myers had already chalked up 42 wins this season for more than $1 million in stakes.
Fell, the general manager at Goodwood Stud, was hopeful a victory for Gingernuts in the Rosehill Guineas on Saturday would lift the couple’s spirits.
Goodwood Stud bred the New Zealand Derby winner, who will contest Saturday’s Guineas as he builds towards the A$2 million ATC Derby on April 16.
