Fair finds new groove at bar

"...this time people will be able to have a beer, food and get some records." Matt Davies, fair organiser

Old school music lovers will get a chance to get their hands on some vinyl at the Black Plates Record Fair and check out some DJS at the same time.

Matt Davies has been running the fair, which sells new and used vinyl, for the past few years and said it will be held in a new venue this time around.

‘‘It will be the usual sort of buzz with DJS playing all day, but this time people will be able to have a beer, food and get some records. I do an event at Brewer’s called Soul Blender with funk and soul and all that sort of stuff, so the record fair will go into that, which is cool. It will be more of an event this year.’’

Davies said there would be a huge range of records on offer, from jazz to blues, rock and soul.

Four local record sellers would be at the fair, including John Thornley and Brian Wafer.

‘‘Brian is a legendary Taranaki guy and in the 70s he travelled up and down New Zealand selling records. He knows his stuff and he’s just a jolly guy and he loves the spirit of the fair.’’

Guest DJS include Omega B from Tauranga, who is also selling, Nat Lover from Palmerston North and So Dramatic from Whanganui.

‘‘So Dramatic is the godfather of record digging, he’s the man, the knowledge that he has of New Zealand music is colossal, so it will be good to have him there.

‘‘There will certainly be a bit of an open turntables policy as well, so if someone turns up and they have some records, provided it’s not 200bpm slamming death metal, then they can play some records.’’

The Black Plates annual record fair will be held at Brewers Apprentice on April 8, 11am-4pm.
