Rapist recalled after lying to police

-

A rapist once described as ‘‘Palmerston North’s Justin Bieber’’ is back behind bars after lying to police and hiding from authorities.

Jamayne Glastonbury was 18 years old when he dragged a woman off the street and raped her in a Palmerston North alleyway in January 2014.

He first told police he had been in Whanganui on the night in question, and said his DNA on his victim’s neck was the result of ‘‘hooking up with a chick’’ on New Year’s Eve.

During legal proceedings, before Glastonbury was sentenced in the Palmerston North District Court in 2014 to three years’ jail, defence lawyer Peter Brosnahan said Glastonbury thought he had talked the woman into having sex with him.

‘‘He thought he was Palmerston North’s Justin Bieber or something, I don’t know.’’

Glastonbury was given parole in February, but has been recalled to prison because the Parole Board did not trust him while he was free.

The Department of Corrections made the application for him to be recalled due to his conduct while on parole.

According to a Parole Board report, Glastonbury was arrested for driving a motorcycle while forbidden, giving false details to police, and careless driving.

He pleaded guilty to those matters in the Palmerston North District Court on Thursday.

The judge convicted and discharged Glastonbury, saying being recalled to prison was punishment enough.

The Parole Board’s main concern was that Glastonbury had not been returned to prison until a month after they issued an interim recall notice in May.

The board was told Glastonbury had ‘‘a fair idea’’ a recall was on its way.

He made arrangements to have his property shifted to a new address and stayed at various Palmerston North addresses before handing himself in.

‘‘He became more apprehensive about returning to prison after having served some two-and-a-half years, and he made what he acknowledges to be dumb decisions,’’ the board said.

The board was not satisfied Glastonbury had breached any of his release conditions.

However, they were concerned about the overall picture.

Glastonbury’s sentence expires in September, and he will be on release conditions for six months.
