College men continue unbeaten

- PETER BOWEN Fairfax NZ

Defending men’s club hockey champions College retained the Challenge Trophy with a 4-1 win over Marist at the twin turfs on Saturday.

University holidays and player rep commitments to Central under-18s affected both line-ups. Marist challenged College right from the start, testing College’s resolve with an early goal by Josh Scott.

The game buzzed along with College equalising through striker Aaron Purser by quartertime. Marist bustled and College had to work for everything.

Hayden Mullins in goal kept Marist in the game and was called on to make some slick saves as Marist toiled hard to dominate College’s strength in the midfield.

Roshan Govind broke the deadlock on target with a half volley to give College the lead into halftime. Angus Hazlett pounced on a loose pass to swing the game College’s way with a field goal. Mike Young added the final nail, grabbing an opportunistic goal mid quarter to ensure College won.

It was a tight contest at the start as Massey soaked up pressure from Tech. Massey got the early break through with Brendan Payne on target at a penalty corner.

Massey’s confidence started to rise when they scored again to lead 2-0 at quartertime. The game continued to pulse back and forth, with Tech testing Massey’s defence until Massey scored a field goal, extending their lead at half time.

The pace continued with Massey confident under pressure, slotting five unanswered goals against a depleted Tech side that scrambled well, never giving up.

Angus Griffin had a standout game in goal along with Jayden Hanna and Mitchell Smith in the field for Massey.

Boys’ High competed strongly, with the scores locked 0-all at quarter time. Play fluctuated between both ends, with promising moves not finished as possession was coughed up easily.

Momentum swung HSHC’S way closing in on halftime when Blair Hodgson scored two of his hattrick goals. HSHC gained confidence minutes into the third quarter when they scored again. After that the game got away from the depleted Boys’ High side, who were without their Central under18 representatives, as goals came at regular intervals. Alan Kirk and Luke Woodfield stood out for Boys’ High. The women’s leaders
