When they turned, they saw him lying in the road. . .

Two Manawatu men suffered serious head injuries in one night, with one fighting for his life in the intensive care unit at Wellington Hospital.

The most serious of the two, a 20-year-old from Feilding, was found lying injured in car parks on Main St, near the Ministry of Social Development offices and The Office bar, in Palmerston North about 10.30pm on Saturday night.

A hospital spokesman said the man was in a serious condition on Monday.

His family are at his bedside, but it was not immediately clear what caused the horrific injuries.

Detective Sergeant Grayson Joines said police were keeping an open mind about what may have happened.

The man was walking along Main St with a group of friends when he stopped to talk to other friends in a parked vehicle.

The man’s other friends continued walking, but when they turned, they saw him lying in the road, having suffered ‘‘a serious head injury’’.

In the early hours of Sunday morning, another Palmerston North man suffered a mystery head injury.

An ambulance rushed to where the man was found, on Main St between the old High Flyers building and The Daily, about 12.40am.

The man was admitted to Palmerston North Hospital with a fractured skull.

Police were investigating both incidents.

For the first one, officers want to speak with a blonde-haired woman who was in the driver’s seat of the parked vehicle, in which two men were passengers. Palmerston North police are appealing for information about the Feilding man’s injuries.
