Double delight for Hartley-brown
Madi Hartley-brown walked away from the Cycling New Zealand national school road championship with two titles to his name.
The Palmerston North Boys’ High School rider added the boys’ under 20 points race title to his belt on Monday to go with his road race win on the weekend.
Her finished the points race just ahead of Baily O’donnell (Christchurch Boys High) and Aaron Wyllie (Auckland Grammar).
‘‘That was the hardest race of my life, it was full gas the whole way riding into the wind so it was good to get the win’’ Hartleybrown said.
Hartley-brown’s effort of double titles bettered the performance of former Boys’ High track star Campbell Stewart last year who claimed the points race, but was pipped in the road race.
There was a pile of Manawatu¯ locals who were on the podium on the final day of the event in Feilding. Boys’ High’s Jack Pronk was third in the under 16 points race category, while schoolmate Chenuka Rajapakse was third in the under 14 race.
Palmerston North Girls’ High School’s Connie O’brien battled for second in the girls’ under 20 race, while Rose O’brien was second in the under 15 race.
Holly Mcinnes, from Palmerston North Intermediate Normal School, was third in the under 13 race.
It was a mixed event for Boys’ High, who were unable to defend the Sir Bernard Fergusson Trophy for under-20s teams.
But their junior team won the Paul Matthews Trophy for the under-16 grade in 23:30.61 ahead of Takapuna Grammar School and Auckland Grammar.
The event featured 700 riders from 83 schools.
