Hospice fundraising in full swing

The day’s most talked about round of golf may have been on a private course in Northland with an expresident, but the most worthy one was in Palmerston North.

Thirty-three teams of eager golfers gathered at the Manawatu¯ Golf Course to compete in the annual Michael Higgins tournament yesterday.

The tournament and fundraiser for the Arohanui Hospice teed off at noon after a barbecue lunch.

Sausage sizzles, raffles and competitions were going at several of the holes, including for a brandnew BMW X2 up for grabs.

The event is run each year by Arohanui Hospice.

‘‘We expect to raise about $35,000-$40,000 from the day,’’ said event organiser Robyn Naylor.

As well as 33 teams of four players each, a number of supporters turned out to watch the tournament and attend the dinner, prize-giving and auction in the evening.

This is the ninth year the Michael Higgins tournament has been held. It honours the late businessman and keen golfer who did much to upgrade the 8th ‘‘Higgins’’ hole at the course.

His widow Robyn Higgins attended the event, as did Sir Pat Higgins.

Naylor said it was great so many people were willing to participate.

‘‘It’s a nice way to remember Michael Higgins and raise money for a good cause.’’
