Finding the gold in our pockets
‘‘If you have a talent, it’s OK to show it off.’’ Shaun Kay, Pineapple Studios
A coffee, a slice and sweet sounds could be the recipe for a street-wise Saturday in the city.
Pineapple Studios and Palmy Unleashed have teamed up to host Busk Palmy, an event supporting local musicians and performers, and bringing energy and entertainment to the pavements of Little Cuba.
There will be performances by musicians, comedians, fire dancers and techno-trance DJS, on April 14, from 2pm.
Shaun Kay, project leader at Pineapple Studios and owner of boutique store Groovylicious, hopes the event will inspire performers to come forward and share their talents with the community.
‘‘If you have a talent, it’s OK to show it off,’’ he said.
Cafe´ Cuba, Moxies Cafe´, Hope Vineyard, Cyclista and Groovylicious have offered spaces outside their shops for performers.
One Night Only is providing the staging and music equipment.
The public will be able to roam around Little Cuba – a collective made up of George St, Cuba St and Coleman Mall, and coined due its feel having an affinity with Cuba St in Wellington – and enjoy the talent the community has to offer.
Kay hopes the event will inspire community engagement with local musicians and performers. ‘‘Support your locals.’’
The event is inspired by annual busking festivals in Christchurch and Wellington. Kay is hoping that Busk Palmy too will become an annual event.
Busk Palmy is free to attend, but listeners are encouraged to throw any spare change into buskers’ hats or guitar cases and support the cafes who are donating space, electricity and advertising by having a drink, a snack, or a meal.
Kay said the event wouldn’t be possible without the the generosity of One Night Only.
