The Way We Were

FROM THE ARCHIVES

-

This Manawatu¯ Standard photo was published on Thursday, August 20, 1970, with this caption: ‘‘In a gruelling netball match, which included an assortment of rucks, scrums and lineouts, with a smattering of fancy dress, prefects of St Joseph’s School in Fitchett St were beaten by a superior staff side 36-18. Informed sources have it that the staff side had several ring-ins, including a bank manager. Here, Annette Heiden and Sister Anthony chase after the ball.’’ When its lease of grounds and buildings ran out in the late 1970s, this girls’ school merged with St Peter’s College. The Metlife retirement village now stands on the old school site in Fitchett St. This and other historical Standard news photos can be seen at manawatuheritage.pncc.govt.nz.
