Shots fired during chase

-

Police officers came under fire during a chase across Auckland’s motorways yesterday. A witness said a car involved in the pursuit, which ended with arrests in Rodney, had bullet holes and smashed windows. A major highway north of Auckland was closed for several hours following the incident. Waitemata¯ district commander Superintendent Tusha Penny said it was extremely lucky no-one was killed in the incident, during which at least 10 officers were fired upon. The chase began as officers were looking a person who had escaped custody. Police spotted the person in a car and a man inside allegedly fired at least one shot at police before the driver fled. One offender was arrested in Kaukapakapa about 12.30pm. The chase ended with a second arrest about 1.10pm. Two men, aged 22 and 23, were to appear in court today.
