Selectors pick new blood for rep team

- George Heagney

The Manawatu¯ men’s rep bowls team will have a slightly new look to it for the Arnott Duckett Trophy fixture in Whanganui next weekend.

Both the men and women are sending two teams for the first senior rep fixture of the year. The men are playing at Laird Park and the women at Wanganui East.

Men’s selector Brian Little said he and fellow selector Des Meyer had picked a lot of new faces.

‘‘That was in part to show people we’re looking at finding people that would be able to step up,’’ Little said. ‘‘Having said that, we tried to pay back the same seven players that went to Christchurch and did so well at the interclub last year.’’

Manawatu¯ is also sending eightyear-and-under teams for players with less than eight years’ experience.

A few players who are eligible for the masters over-60 team weren’t selected, and there were a couple of others unavailable due to work.

There is still quality, with Mark Noble and Scotty Mcgavin in one of the fours, while Little is in the other four, Shane Rogers in one of the pairs, and Stephen Love is one of the singles players.

Women’s selectors Bev Herbert and Eric Cairncross have gone for the tried and true for their two teams.

Experienced Terrace End bowlers Mere Fryer, Lynlea Rogers, Georgie Kahui-rogers, Honey Giblett and Sheryn Blake are in one of the teams.

Robin Schischka, Julianne Mills and Emily Gray are also in the mix.
