2018 Breakfast Club That’s a wrap for 2018!

-

Sunday 2nd December was the 123rd monthly breakfast run and our last until next February. Arohanui Hospice is the Classic Car Breakfast Club’s charity of choice, so it was special to have Clare Randall (their CEO) along for our December drive. As this is our Christmas drive members donated special festive season food from the Hospice wish list as well as the traditional cans. Children’s gifts were also donated to brighten Christmas day for the less fortunate in our community and were to be distributed by Hospice as well as Methodist Social Services. Another fantastic turnout of nearly 40 cars making it 76 people for breakfast. Registration was busy with the larger volume of cars as well as all the extra donations that needed to be separated and stowed for delivery on Monday. The weather was fine with just a gentle breeze as we all departed in a convoy from the Supercheap carpark in Rangitikei Street. We headed west out of the city with the first turn being towards Feilding at Awahuri. Next, we headed for Halcombe via some country roads then over the Rangitikei River at Kakariki before motoring down State Highway 1 to Bulls. The first stop of the day (our toilet break) was in the sealed carpark behind the new complex of shops next to the BP service station. Leaving Bulls, we headed south on State Highway 1 to Sanson where we turned north and headed for Halcombe again by some different roads. Straight through Halcombe to the Stanway area and onto some very scenic roads to Cheltenham. They would have been more scenic if we had not encountered some rogue rain showers. Down Kimbolton Road towards Feilding before taking the road through Colyton to Hiwinui and finally on to the centre of Palmerston North via the Roslyn area. We had been concerned about parking close to the Verdict Café in Palmerston North as we were aware there was a fair taking place in the Square as well as the Christmas Parade. However, as the parade was cancelled, and the fair didn’t happen then the issue of parking didn’t eventuate. After we consumed a tasty breakfast, including some special Christmas treats produced by Carole and her team, Clare gave a short address advising us of how Hospice functions and showing the value of our contributions. Next there were raffles for prizes generously donated by members ranging from a Christmas wreath, a special gift basket, car care products and assorted food and wine, along with a raffle for a special Christmas cake.
