Last orders as Food Barn wraps up for good

- Paul Mitchell

One of Woodville’s favourite takeaway shops has nearly wrapped its last fish, and stirred its last stir fry.

Joey Haung said she and her husband opened the Food Barn, on Vogel St, when they moved to Woodville 13 years ago – and it would be sad closing up for the last time today.

But with their children growing up, it was time to look to the future, she said.

Angel Haung, the family’s eldest daughter, is headed to university next year and her two siblings will be doing the same within the next couple of years.

Angel said it was exciting to be on the verge of striking out on her own, but she would miss working with the whole family at the Food Barn.

‘‘When we all move away, Mum and Dad won’t have enough help at the shop, so they decided they might as well do it now,’’ she said.

Haung said the family decided closing the Food Barn and moving to Auckland was the best move for their future.

Auckland offered more tertiary education options, so it would be easier for the family to stay near each other as the children branched out, she said.

‘‘We’d like to stay in Woodville. The people are nice, good people, but there aren’t a lot of universities or colleges around.’’

Sue Jurss said she took her two sons to get dinner from the Food Barn every Tuesday for four years.

An order of pork buns and cheeseburgers was their traditional shared treat to kick off the week.

‘‘I wish them well, but I’ll definitely miss them – and so will a lot of people.’’
