New year, new opportunities
A warm welcome to 2019 – I hope readers have started the year with bright hopes and plenty of time under blue skies.
For the team in the Manawatu¯ newsroom, change tends to be constant, but it’s worth noting the departure last week of one our long-term colleagues.
Grant Miller, who has helped shape stories with The Manawatu¯ Standard for 14 years, as a reporter, head of content and most recently a news director, is bound for the East Coast and a new journalistic life as a sports reporter in Gisborne.
Devoted to the craft of news writing, and helping our young reporters become better journalists, Grant has provided astute guidance and counsel, and has made an indelible contribution to the quality of our content.
For several years he also produced the regular Miller On Politics column, which always engaged strongly with readers.
I wish Grant all the best on his next adventure.
The new year has also brought to a close our fortnightly arts review Critical Eye, produced for many years by Fran Dibble. I’d like to thank Fran for her years of insight and enthusiasm for the local arts scene.
Readers can be assured our arts coverage will remain strong and spirited in the hands of arts reporter Carly Thomas.
I’d also like to welcome back a familiar face to the newsroom. Greer Berry, formerly a Manawatu¯ Standard digital editor and news director, and the mum at the heart of fortnightly parenting column Cold Coffee, is back on deck as a news director, providing parental leave cover until Easter.
