Fundraiser a veritable treasure trove

-

Goodwill Terrace End is gearing up for its biggest event of the year - its Yesterday’s Treasures, a major fundraiser that attracts a big crowd.

The event is being held in the Ferguson St Community Leisure Centre on Saturday March 30 from 9am to 2pm.

Yesterday’s Treasures is a sale of beautifully presented vintage, heritage and retro items that have been collected over the course of the year from items donated to Goodwill stores.

The theme for this year’s fundraiser celebrates the end of World War I and in keeping with that theme the venue will be decorated with flags and other items pertaining to that time.

Last year’s theme was Steampunk which proved so popular that the mannequins will again be on display and there will be Steampunk clothing for sale.

Store manager Catherine Moxham and Yesterday’s Treasures organiser Valerie Dittmer are excited about some of the items that have been donated.

‘‘We have been given an amazing collection of some of the girlie things we really love. These include gloves, sewing notions, lace, beaded motifs, kimonos and a Spanish shawl that dates from the 1950s that is in mint condition,’’ says Valerie.

‘‘We have also been given a collection of fur stoles and while these aren’t really to our taste they are the real deal and are a part of history. We also have a number of pairs of old gold rimmed glasses that should attract plenty of interest.’’

Catherine’s passion is retro New Zealand ceramics and she has been collecting Crown Lynn and Temuka pottery to be sold at Yesterday’s Treasures.

Catherine says not everything at Yesterday’s Treasures will be vintage and retro, there will be a range of women’s fashionwear which will be for sale.

While there has been a lot of hard work by both staff and volunteers to prepare for Yesterday’s Treasures, Catherine and the Terrace End team have also been preparing for the change of seasons and have just set up a display of winter boots in the shop window.

‘‘We are also on the lookout for winter woolies that are always in demand,’’ says Catherine.

The big development at Goodwill Terrace End is that the opening hours have been extended and the store will now be open from 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday. Saturday hours are unchanged at 10am till 2pm.

The extended hours are being trialled for two months so Catherine is hoping people will take advantage of the new opening hours.

‘‘We are hoping by extending the opening hours we will be able to get people to pop in on their way to work or on their way home.’’
