Embrace dark and stormy interiors
On these blustery, chilly days snuggling down in a dark and moody interior can give you instant comfort. You can go as big or small as you like, but these tones work well in living rooms, media rooms and bedrooms.
‘‘Contradictory to the name, interiors like this should envelop and strengthen you, providing the best possible comfort and calm,’’ Wellington interior designer Kerryn Dunshea said.
‘‘Stormy is a terrific look for those bold enough to try it. The key is to go all in and embrace the aesthetic.’’
Wall colour will make the most immediate dramatic statement. Think a dark palette – moody blues, greys, deep and dirty teals, and inky blacks.
For a total makeover, use dark timbers on the floor, consider wall murals, and always add a lot of texture.
Wools, velvet and furs all give that snug cocooning feel. And don’t forget ‘‘a touch of glamour’’, Dunshea added, through the addition of brass, mirrors, and lamps for example.
Play with this vibe in southfacing rooms.
‘‘You can embrace the lack of direct sun and try interesting light levels with lamps and lighting,’’ Dunshea said.
‘‘If your house is blessed with sun in every corner, try applying the look to a smaller room to give it a snug feel.’’
To perfect the style, plenty of imagination and unique pieces are also key. ‘‘I’d be looking in vintage and antique shops for interesting side tables, rugs and art,’’ Dunshea said.
If you’re not up for a full room makeover, Auckland interior designer Nikki Mcnamara, of Stylemaker, said there are things you can do to add this look.
‘‘Layer up on bed linen, candles and overflowing amounts of cushions,’’ she said. ‘‘A nifty trick of making the room look effortlessly put together is to go big on basket weave, natural warming textures and furs – add sheepskins underfoot and draped over the back of a chair.’’
