Students gorge on pies
Hot mince pastries were devoured as hungry students took part in a pie-eating competition at Massey University.
Nine people entered the competition yesterday and second-year journalism student James Pocock, 19, was able to stuff his face the fastest.
The contestants were given three minutes to eat as many Goodtime mince pies as possible.
Pocock and two others had gobbled their first pie inside the first minute but the others couldn’t keep up with a hungry Pocock, who had finished finished 31⁄2 pies when time ran out.
‘‘I feel like I couldn’t do another pie for a while. It is a bit of fun.’’
Pocock said he had never entered an eating competition before and hadn’t done any training, but he had his technique sorted by the time he had powered through three pies. ‘‘The water helped a lot.
‘‘A sip, a single sip, helps it go through way easier.’’
The pies were warm, but not too hot.
Pocock usually goes for a mince and cheese when he has a hankering for a pie.
While the others were munching quickly on their pies, communications student Haleigh Hook, 19, quietly went about her business eating and was still going on her first pie after the three minutes was up.
‘‘I was just having my lunch.’’
Her pie of choice is a mince and cheese.
‘‘I think I probably could have done more, at least five pies, if it was mince and cheese.’’
Pocock won a $100 voucher for the Massy University Students’ Association Shop for his efforts.
