Foxton-born singer plays in Palmerston North

-

It’s been a decade since she released new music, but singer Miriam Clancy is returning home to share a new album.

She is playing at The Globe in Palmerston North today as part of her first New Zealand tour in more than eight years.

The tour is celebrating her third album, Astronomy, which has launched in the United States to critical acclaim.

Clancy was brought up in Foxton and started her music career playing in bars around Horowhenua and Manawatu¯, and said it was exciting to be back home and playing in her old stomping ground. ‘‘It’s going to be great to be back playing near Horowhenua.’’

Clancy, who has been based in New York City since 2011, said the 10-song album was inspired by her time living on Great Barrier Island while writing the album, especially its view of the stars. The island is an internationally recognised Dark Sky Sanctuary.

‘‘It would wrap around you and lift you into the cosmos ... It’s amazing how something so far from the Earth can affect us and give a sense of perspective.’’

Clancy said her album was ‘‘definitely forged in New York’’ and sounded different to her previous albums. She has worked on the album for two years with producer Chris Coady, who is known for his work with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Beach House.

The album is laden with electric guitars, Wurlitzers, early 90s drum machines and analogue synths. Other tour locations include Wellington, Picton and Christchurch, with the tour finishing on December 19 on Great Barrier Island.

Tickets are $10 from Under the Radar.
