Boys’ High take their third win
The Palmerston North Boys’ High School first XV have chalked up their third win of the season, downing New Plymouth’s Francis Douglas Memorial College.
Boys’ High won 36-10 at Boys’ High yesterday, their third win from as many games. They have one more outing, against Wellington College in Palmerston North after the school holidays on July 18, before the Super 8 starts.
Pushing the last pass or an offload cost Boys’ High at times, but they were mostly a cut above Francis Douglas.
Boys’ High’s forwards made inroads, with their carries and offloads catching Francis Douglas napping, and Boys’ High weren’t afraid to spread the ball either.
Their backs were dangerous running from deep, with centre Lafo Takiari-ah Ching, wing Tavita HenareSchuster and fullback Curtis Heaphy all threatening, and wide passing found space on the edges.
The Boys’ High scrum pushed Francis Douglas back every time, giving Francis Douglas sloppy ball, but Boys’ High struggled to find a target at lineout time.
Boys’ High scored three first-half tries to lead 17-5 at halftime, after Francis Douglas stemmed the tide with a late try of their own.
In the second spell Boys’ High had long periods of attack on Francis Douglas’ line and scored three more tries.
The bustling Takiari-ah Ching scored a double, with his second coming as he sliced through on the angle almost untouched.
In the forwards locks Reuben Davis and Hunter Morrison were workhorses and they had good output from their front rowers, who shunted Francs Douglas back at scrum time.
Francis Douglas were happy to use the ball on attack too, but their attack wasn’t direct enough.
Francis Douglas scored their second try through an 80-metre intercept.
