Freyberg picked up an important firstinnings win over Old Boys in the latest round of the two-day competition.

After losing first innings points to Marist in the first round, Freyberg bounced back to get a result against Old Boys at Fitzherbert Park on Saturday.

There is one round left before the playoffs.

After scoring 226 last week, Freyberg had Old Boys in trouble at the end of day one at 111-8. Old Boys didn’t score much more on day two, getting to 146 thanks to Bryce Grant’s 89 not out.

Freyberg seamers Brad Fulton and Ali Akhter took four and three wickets, respectively, giving them an 80-run lead.

Freyberg then scored 193-8 in their second dig and pushed for quick runs, giving them a lead of 273.

Scott Mitchell came close to a century, but was out for 91, caught down the ground. Mitchell had an opening stand of 64 with opener Charles Parker, who scored 33.

Old Boys spinners Trent Mcgrath and Regan Fleming put the brakes on as Mcgrath took four 4-57 and Fleming 3-65.

Old Boys then had 41 overs to bat and hung on to be 96-8 at stumps.

Freyberg looked like they were closing in at 55-5 and 83-7, but Old Boys did enough to survive until the end of play.

Palmerston North Boys’ High School hung on for a close first-innings win over Palmerston.

Lower-order partnerships got Palmerston close to Boys’ High’s first-innings total of 267-6 declared from last week, but the red caps were bowled out for 259 this week, eight runs short. Palmerston had resumed the day at 73-2 with Ashan Kulalhilake unbeaten on 25, and he went on to make 50. Rob Sheary scored 74, but at 186-7, Boys’ High looked like finishing them off.

But veteran Russell Swindells hung around with the tail and he made 37, getting them to 213-9 and then 259, agonisingly short of getting first innings.

Seam bowlers Aadesh Ganugapati and Jonty Fleck picked up 3-58 and 4-42, respectively, with Ganugapti getting rid of Swindells, the last man out.

Boys’ High scored 78-1 in their second innings before play was called off about 6pm. Bayley Latter was on 42 not out and Angus Lyver on 36 not out.

In the only outright result of the round, United beat Feilding by 10 wickets at Ko¯whai Park.

United resumed the second day at 170-5 with a lead of 45 after bowling Feilding out for 125 on day one.

United’s tail wagged to get them through to 263 all out, a lead of 138, with Jack Harris making 26, and Thomas Kirk and Cam Harris 20 each.

In Feilding’s second innings, they were bowled out for 180. Meanwhile, the Boys’ High first XI had a 214-run win over St Patrick’s College Silverstream in Wellington last week, set up by a century from Curtis Heaphy. Heaphy made 127 not out in Boys’ High’s first-innings total of 278-4. Jaiden Meyer scored 44 and Bayley Latter 38.

Boys’ High then routed Silverstream for just 64 in 28.5 overs. Boys’ High are scheduled to play Auckland Grammar School in Palmerston North on Sunday, but a decision will be made later in the week.
